Physical Education at St Lawrence

Sport, gymnastics and dance have a very high profile at St Lawrence.  All teachers and many teaching assistants have a real love of and commitment to physical activities and voluntarily give their time each week to extra-curricular activities.

The PE programme is carefully planned and implemented to give all pupils a thorough foundation in games, athletics, swimming, gymnastics and dance.  Pupils in their final year have a residential outdoor activity week on the Isle of Wight.

St Lawrence is fortunate to have two former secondary PE heads of department on the staff. In addition, the school has several teachers who majored in PE as part of their teacher training.

The School has an extensive playing field and an artificial pitch.

St Lawrence has its own swimming pool, originally dug out and established by parents more than 30 years ago and rigorously maintained and improved ever since.  As a result, all pupils are able to swim during every one of their years in school.  Every year, from a leaving cohort of 60 pupils, 95-100% pupils are able to swim 25 metres and in most cases much further.

The pool has always been “outdoors” but as the School has increased in size to 600 pupils, the Governing Body decided, after extensive research, to cover the pool with a versatile canopy in order to allow all-year-round swimming to take place.  Sport England turned down an application for financial support, swimming for some reason not being for them a priority.  The Governing Body has, however, with community and parental support, raised £100,000.  The School has contributed its £20,000 PE grant for the same purpose to provide sufficient swimming time for all its pupils annually.  In addition to the new canopy now in place, the pool has been re-designed, has new surrounds including a safety surface, new dehumidifiers, new pipework and an automatic dosing unit.

The School’s hall has recently been enlarged and a second studio/hall added, ideal for gymnastics, dance, badminton and table-tennis.

St Lawrence has been overall District Sports Champions, having won 37 of the available 42 trophies in the 6 years up to 2014.

St Lawrence has also won the Area Netball Championships in each of the past 10 years and St Lawrence teams have represented Sussex in inter-county competitions, being Sussex champions in 2015 and 2018.

St Lawrence has also won the Area Basketball Championship on two occasions in recent years and the Area Football Championships.

St Lawrence were runners up in the area cricket, basketball and netball ‘B’ teams in 2019.

The are a large number of extra-curricular sports clubs, run by school staff before school, at lunch-times and after school. These are very popular. Athletics, for example, attracts up to 150 pupils.

In addition, St Lawrence has a private dance club, golf club and tennis club in the hall.

A booklet of clubs is published twice a year.

Coaching costs for cricket will continue to be met during this year from the PE money.
