Physical Education and Games at St Lawrence

Evidencing the Impact of the Primary PE and Sport Premium 2022/23Evidencing the Impact of the Primary PE and Sport Premium 2021/22

PE and Sport are held in high regard at St Lawrence. Our key aims are to: provide regular, varied, purposeful and enjoyable exercise/sporting opportunities for all of our children; and to help them to fully appreciate the important role exercise plays in a healthy lifestyle.

All children have two weekly allocated PE sessions. The content of these sessions is based on the GetSet4PE scheme (https://getset4education.co.uk/), which is fully implemented across the school. This allows our children to develop core movement, tactical and fitness skills in a context where our school values are also a basis. Learning in these sessions in also enhanced by the personal knowledge, experience and passion that our school staff are able to provide.

In addition to curriculum PE sessions, we also offer a range of additional PE and sporting opportunities. Before school, after school and lunchtime sporting clubs are offered to children across the school. Some of these are run by trusted external providers, others are run by school staff on a voluntary basis. Due to our membership of the local school-sport umbrella organisation (Mid-Sussex Active - (https://midsussexactive.org.uk/), we are also able to offer our children frequent opportunities to represent the school in competitive sport as well as attend taster festivals during which they can find out about activities that may be new to them.

At St Lawrence, we are very lucky to have our own covered, heated swimming pool, which is in operation throughout the whole year. Consequently, each of our children swim for a minimum of four half-terms every year; this is far in advance of the curriculum swimming provision the vast majority of schools are able to offer. Additional swimming tuition is also part of our extra-curricular provision.

For many years, athletics and – in particular – netball have been areas of significant inter-school success for St Lawrence, with the school achieving regular success at a local, district and county level. In addition, a number of inter-house competitions are held during the year; the house tradition is very strong at St Lawrence and these events are underpinned by the school values as well as competitive success.

We are very lucky to have the support of a number of village clubs/organisations, who allow our children to enjoy extensive exercise and sporting opportunities outside of the school day. These include: Hurstpierpoint Colts Football Club, Hurstpierpoint Cricket Club and Hurstpierpoint Lawn Tennis Club.
